Local Nature Reserves
Natural England recommends that people living in towns and
cities should have:
-
Accessible natural greenspace less than 300m (in a straight
line) from home.
- At least one accessible 20ha site within 2km of home.
- One accessible 100ha site within 5km of home and
- One accessible 500ha site within 10km of home.
- Statutory Local Nature Reserves provided at a minimum level
of 1 ha per thousand population.
Local Nature Reserves (LNRs) are places for both people and
wildlife. They are places with wildlife or geological features
that are of special interest locally. They offer people special
opportunities to study or learn about nature or simply to enjoy
it.
Local Nature Reserve (or LNR) is a statutory designation made
under Section 21 of the National Parks and Access to the
Countryside Act 1949 by principal local authorities. Parish and
Town Councils can also declare LNRs but they must have the powers
to do so delegated to them by a principal local authority.
Action for Nature is actively seeking the declaration of more
