This big powerful Dragonfly can travel large distances looking for food and new ponds. Look for down curved tail in flight and black stripe down centre of abdomen
Habitat. - Ponds lakes, sand and Gravel Pits. Prefers large expanses of water.

This animal is easier to identify as it is the only one with smoky brown wings. It is often found patrolling hedgerows for food from June to October
Habitat. - Ponds lakes, canals, ditches, sand and Gravel Pits.

Broad abdomen makes this Dragonfly easy to identify. Males are highly conspicuous around the edge of pools. Females are a yellow brown and hide away in brambles.

Occurs in large numbers alongside open water from May to September. There are six blues which need close examination to tell apart however the most likely one is the common blue. Females are a dull brown green colour.

Flys from may to September and can be active even on cooler days. Females may have a body colour of blue, rose or even violet. Immature males have a green thorax which goes blue when mature.

From May to September Male often first appears as a large black butterfly with its fluttery weak flight and large black wing spots. The females are bright green with the males a more irridesant blue.
