The Feature Creature - Newt.
Newt Facts:
-
Much
of an adult Newts live is spent out of water hunting
prey in woodlands under stones and logs. Both males
and females are a simple brown colour looking just
like small lizards. They will spend the winter in
hibernation under stones or in crevasses.
- Between February and June adults return to ponds
to breed. The males become brighter with a wavy
crest and a bright orange belly with dark black
spots.
- The newts pair off and perform an elaborate
dance of tail waving. Newts will use even a small
garden pond if it has lots of water weeds.
- Each egg is laid individually wrapped in the
leaf of some pond plant. The young tadpole hatches
after a week and eats tiny water animals such as
Daphnia. Unlike the frog and toad the newt poles
develop front legs first.
- Adult newts feed on slugs and worms as well as
other tadpoles.
